The .com domain is the hottest ticket out there. It fetches the most money, and has all the biggest domains. Out of the current PR10 domains, only a handful are non-.coms. But does this mean that you should disregard your potential goldmine just because it’s not a .com domain? Of course not. While the other domains may not have to notoriety of the .com, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t work for you. But how can you know if your website can compete with the .com? Keep reading to find out.

What You Need To Keep In Mind

1. What Is Your Site For? To begin with, you need to determine just exactly why you are creating your website. If it’s purely a landing page, only directing visitors to an affiliate site, then there is no need for a more expensive premium domain name. Typically, in a case like this, traffic is the visit-and-move-on type. They don’t tend to stick around or come back later. Alternatively, if you are going after a trafficked site, with repeat visitors, then a .com may serve you a little better.

2. Clever >Boring. Think about all those witty domain names out there. Ever use del.icio.us? How about blo.gs? Both are great examples of clever domain name hacks. Unconventional domain names that combines different domain levels to spell out a full name or keyword not only look good, but are also memorable. If your .com keyword domain is taken, consider splitting it up in this manner. Most major name registrar’s (such as sedo) will now allow you to register these unconventional extensions, making these hacks easy to get. All it takes is a little creativity.

There isn’t a shortage of webmaster blogs out there. This isn’t a bad thing – they have many good thoughts on running a successful website, gaining traffic, and making money online. So Instead of rehashing old material, I thought I would present it in a different manner. Most people tell you what to do, I’m going to tell you what NOT to do. If you follow these tips, you will be sure to end up with a barren website, free of visitors and traffic, where you can be alone with your thoughts. If, however, you would prefer to have a thriving community, use these ideas as a basis to learn from.

1. Stay away from any statements about what you do or sell. Keep it a total mystery why they decided to visit your website in the first place. It’s like a secret club – keep your visitors in the dark. Have you been to websites like this? Where you end up thinking “What the hell is this site about?” If you are not presenting a clear and concise reason about why your visitors should stick around (and spend some money), then they won’t.

2. Drown your visitors with way too much information. Almost as bad as the “What is this site about?” problem, are the “Holy page of text Batman!” type of websites. I’m sure you all know exactly what I’m talking about. The page opens and your jaw drops. It may feel like you’ve gone back in time, to a website from 1995. Where do I go? What do I click? I’ll tell you wheer to click, it’s that big back arrow pointing left.

3. Ensure your order process is overly complicated. Wouldn’t you love to fill your shopping cart and then spend 20 minutes trying to figure out how to pay? No? Me neither. Instead of looking, I clicked the “x” in the tope right corner. You have succeeded in getting rid of another client who wanted to spend their money.

When trying to rank for our most prized keywords we sometimes forget about those long-tail keywords out there. It’s easy to do, but a costly mistake. It’s important to note that while the thousands of visitors brought in by the 10 most popular keywords may seem tempting, they really only bring in about 20 percent of the total visitors (for most niches). The other 80 percent of readers can be found through long tail keywords. In this post, I want to focus on a quick report Ryan Spoon did detailing how 5+ Keyword Search Queries Account for 19% of All Searches.

It’s important to note that it wasn’t always this way. Going back, he really shows how things have changed in the past few years. Keyphrases (no longer just keywords)  are now contributing to a greater amount of search queries than ever before. Borrowing a very nicely created graph from his post we can see the sharp increase.

This goes right in line with what Udi Manber, Google’s VP of Engineering, said during at Supernova. He explained that somewhere between “20 to 25% of the queries that Google sees today have never seen before”. 25 percent?!?
