redditgoldFor anyone a little lost by the title, reddit is a social news site. Which means that one user posts content, which is then voted and commented on by other users. This voting causes some content to be displayed more prominently on the front page. Anyone who is a regular will probably agree with me when I say that it’s the user interaction which makes reddit so great. Quite often the comment pages are more interesting than the site itself. With that in mind, reddit decided to have a best of ‘08 award competition - and the results are in.

Best Submission

“I do not have any money so am sending you this drawing I did of a spider instead.”

If you haven’t read this yet, read it now. To give you a quick overview, its about a guy who attempts to pay with a drawing. Of a spider. Then asks for it back. And it keeps going. I think the funniest part is how professional the recipient attempts to keep things…

Best Comment

“Cuil, as a unit of measurement “

What started as an odd thumbnail chosen by reddit, turned into a new scientific unit of measurement.

Best Meme

“100 pushups”

This is really more of a comment than a meme, but it’s great, so I don’t care. One person decided to post something meaningful, so reddit turned it into a satire of itself. This was a common occurance on many comment threads through the year, but none turned out quite as well as this one.

Best Troll

The winner was… I won’t ruin this one for you. But he was everywhere, throwing in “WAKE UP SHEEPLE!” whenever it was needed. Ahh, I can’t keep it back, 911was_an_inside_job took home this prize. He brought a whole new meaning to the word “troll”. Reddit will miss him.

And Many More

Congratulations to all the winners. It’s for these reasons that I love and spend SO much time on reddit. But it wasn’t just all best of’s. While they also gave awards to the best submitter and best subreddit - the worst meme and the worst subreddit didn’t go unnoticed either. The ones I touched on were just a few of my favourites, check out the reddit blog for the rest of the 2008 reddit award winners.
